For everyone who cannot find the proper serial number, I feel your pain. I just spent a short amount of time looking for the solution and finally decided to check the disk. In VERY SMALL FONT on the right side of the disk you will see a WINDVD Serial Number, about 16-20 characters long. I have to say however that Toshiba did a bang up job putting the S/N on the disk which must be in the drive when you are trying to install it. Just remember to push the disk back in after you enter the number and before you hit >Next.

Iomega does things right. I have two zip drives, a Jaz drive, and almost 15 years later, they still work great, or at least did when I put them away in storage. I suspect I will test the reliability of this DVD drive, as I will use it often. The drive is rather noisy, but works great so far. A lot faster than my Macintosh G4 Superdrive.

This worked right off the bat (if you have ever changed an internal CD/DVD, this will be a breeze for you). It is incredibly nice to have custom artwork printed directly on the CD/DVD. I used to use a CD-Stomper printed label thing, which was OK, but this is so much cleaner and doesnt peel off over time. The cons: 1) 30-mins to make a cover [longer than the data hehe] 2) B&W - no color 3) You need to physically remove the disc after the data and turn it over to do the cover. Hopefully in future models they can do more with this, and fix at least 2 of the 3 issues mentioned.

Backup software and technical support are poor

I have this device for backup and chose Iomega Zip drive because the backup software was excellent. This device seemed to be erratic and has special problems backing up e-mail with attachments, it somehow recognized the existence of a plant, but could not find it. The result was that they constantly ask what to do, abort or cancel? It seems that not all of my work has been secured, perhaps because my answer, as he had "terminated", for "Cancel" button only postponed the same question.

The real problem was with technical support, when I use the computer for the DVD drive was not able to get out constantly the same file. After restarting the computer will not start. I tried online search in the FAQs of the exact wording for the first time I saw in the error window, but no such information available. The tech support site offers the opportunity to talk to a man for $ 25, which is not unreasonable. But there is no phone on the website, but it calls for a credit card number. After filling out three pages of forms and click on "Submit" nothing happened. I have nothing against paying for technical support, but I expect to be in contact.
I doubt I will buy another Iomega product.

it works

The burner works with my current XP and 2000 machines without any previous problems for more than 2 years. HotBurn I use on my backup data (especially digital photos) and DVDXCopy XPress for my films. It works!

Just stopped working

This writer for one day to work. I was very disappointed when they are so enthusiastic about the security of my DVD movies. What can I say? Can I trust HP back burner? Looks like I will be up to consumers in another x amount of $ $ to replace? Order Online? Well, I can only provide a guarantee.

unreliable

I have an HP DVD-640E, which is for 13 months works burned DVD's and CD's. I thought it was very valuable. I noticed the case was a bit warm from the beginning and wondered if it should have a fan. Then died, no resurrection, you may not in another DVD burner in the device, unless you find the exact HP substitute for the unique design of the plug and socket, the gentlemen, the burner on the USB interface.
I think I would have been better in the long bought, and one USB internal burner. That was a lot of money for so little use.
It is the second HP DVD burner, I have not the other after 9 months and I have it replaced with some effort. I would not buy another HP DVD drive.
I gave it one star for the reliability, but if not I would have failed him five. It is sad that you're not buying a reliable product, I feel very let down by such a famous name. Come on HP offers me a cheap repair or a good dial-in via a trade and I am in a much more favorable report.

Nice and black

I have this burner in July 2005. Has great, fit perfectly in my ATX case. I've used it to burn sensitive information and has never failed, when a relatively high quality media. Cheaper tend not hard at high speeds, but it may be to blame on the hard drive itself, not the drive.

To my understanding, it has standard dimensions. I compared to my old HP CD burner, and both are equal in size, both in height and width.

Before exploring this burner, I bought a cheaper no-brand, which was terribly bad. I have the Pioneer, and now I'm happy.

Very good for the price

Opened the box, pluged it into my system, the software is installed, and we were off and running. Recognized my Plextor CDRW no problems. Try some old 4x Imation CDR and they bunred without hooks. The only reason why I did not give five stars, it is a little slower than I had expected, but then again I don t have the top of the online system. I would recommend this drive.

Great DVD burner

After reading several DVD burners reviews, I purchased this one. When I received it, I was afraid to install because the box advised Pentium 4 - 1GHz and 512 MB RAM for all DVD recording and my system was a PIII-800 / 256 MB, however I have used it for more than a year without any inconvenience or damaged DVD or CD. Now I have 512 MB and performs even better.



The unit is extremely quiet, fast and reliable. It came with Nero Express 6 bundled that is easy to use and effective. Next week I will be upgrading my computer and this is one of the few components I will keep.

I tried the player out and it played a CD that my son had scratch so bad that the CD will not play in any other player. Price Point is now at a good place for new technology

At first I thought the price of the burner was too much and waited until the price dropped. There is a competing product from Dell and more to come so maybe that's why the price dropped. It looks like a regular disk writer and for the most part it is. I use it like my old dvd writer except this one has dual layer and Qflix features. It gives me an extra burner to make disk copies. I don't use the Qflix mode that much since I've only bought a few titles. I do expect to get a few more for Xmas. I have children visiting who like watching movies over and over. Movies on the pc doesn't hold their interest as well since the monitor is smaller. The movies come from CinemaNow in the special Qflix format. They download in about the same amount of time as other services - 1-2 hours. Of course bandwidth speed will affect the time. With or without the Qflix format it is a solid burner.

Burns special encrypted format

I think many people haven't heard about Qflix technology and wonder what it is. It is a technology that is movie studio approved and allows consumers to burn legally downloaded movies onto dvd disks. Right now there is only one Web site, CinemaNow which offers the correct format. As someone who can't get around easily it seemed like a way to get new movies and have a disk copy. The disk lets me play it on a tv set. One 2 hour movie took around 1-1/2 hours to download on a slow dsl line. I did have some trouble getting the file to prep for disk burning though and had to do it as a separate step. File prep takes a few hours but it doesn't seem to take much resources so I could use my apps while it prepped. I think the plan is also for this technology to appear in kiosks so customers can choose their movie and burn it themselves. Why is this better than buying a regular DVD movie? Technically its not better but it eliminates packaging, which is good for the environment; it should make more movies available since the cost of goods is small for the studios. The burner also burns regular disks so it is a multipurpose burner.

I got this HP DVD burner refurbished, actually. It was a great deal, so I thought, why not try it? It has lots of different software, which is nice. I have not had any problems with it. I love it! I have never had a DVD burner before, but I would say it burned them pretty quickly. I love that you can lay it flat, or stand it up for a space-saver.

I had a huge collection of video tapes and was able to transfer

the entire collection to DVD. Now I know that they will last at

least through my life time.. Also, I find that using the Showbiz

application, I can create customized DVDs for my friends and

that has saved me a ton of money in gifts..

The only problem we had with this product was that we had

limited hard disk memory and had to acquire some more.

And I have probably created more than a 100 DVDs by now.

Great Drive

I'm not sure where these 1 star folks are coming from but I've had this drive for over a year and probably burned 5 to 600 + DVD's flawlessly. I suspect that they are having trouble with the software they are using. I never liked Nero anyway, I use Clone DVD. The drive has been outstanding. Yes, once in a great while (maybe 1/2 of 1 percent) I'll find a bad DVD blank disc, but my software catches it and I just toss the coaster and the next disc is burned without a hitch.

Whose problem?

Ordered it via Circuit City online purchase on July 4 evening. Got it last week by post. Opened it, installed the Nero software, tried... Finally I gave up. It ruined 3 DVD-RW and 1 DVD-R.
Tried to return it to Circuit City at the Union Square Store. The staff said that a HP software was missing, and saying that I had been using it for 2 weeks! I tried to explained to her that it took more than a week to get it by mail and I did not have time to come to the store. She refused to listen, refused to accept my return.
I called Circuit City customer help, she said the only way to return it was by mail but I had to pay for the shipping.
The question here is I did not have it for 2 week, and what good for me to keep the HP installation software? What if the software was not there right from the beginning! The only software I got was the Nero..
I checked HP's web site, there was no driver or software available for download.. Does it mean that there is no HP installation software? The staff of Circuit City Store there was not helpful. If there is something missing in the box, we will not know it until we paid and opened it. Then, it's too late! you can't return it!
I returned the whole box this morning, costing me $10 for nothing but time and energy.

I have owned this item for a couple years and it is great for coverting old VHS tapes to DVD.

I did my research before buying this product. What my conclusion is I use this device to transfer short video's on to my laptop. Thats all that I use it for and it does what it is supposed to do. Customer Review: Great for reading flawed discs

I don't use this drive for burning discs, I use more reliable brands like Pioneer. So why do I use it and like it? It's made by BTC, and BTC drives are great at reading iffy discs. If you want a back-up drive for such a purpose or are building a DVD duplicator, it's great for that purpose. Just use a Pioneer to burn.

I Purchased this drive at Stapels, because i needed a low-cost DVD Burner. I got a Computer for christmas, upgraded the hard drive, and added this DVD Burner. Right now I only have two drives in my computer, one sitting there, not powered, not connected to my PC, because i removed the pin connector thing. I haven't tried to burn anything with it yet, but it read Nero 6 and the other bundled software fine. But it is REALLY loud. The disc must be going at 500+ RPMs. Sometimes i could hear it, faintly, through a 6-inch-thick wall. But overall it seems like a good drive. If anyone could put up a pic of the back of the drive, showing a stock pin connection setup, it would be appreachated.

Customer Review: Unit is OK, Nero is not

The unit itself is not bad, I guess. But it comes with Nero software, and I can't remember a time when Nero wasn't a peice of junk. I had hoped Nero had improved their crappy software when I bought this drive. But nope. Nero is just as crappy as always. Even when it says it has verified the written data, half of the files on DVD are marked as ready to be written. This is a major problem. And when you try to update the Nero software, good luck. Their update routine makes you jump through hoops, and if you don't follow the exact sequence, you'll be in trouble. I don't know why Nero has such a hard time making a quality product, but I also dont understand why DVD drive manufacturers cant do a better job themselves.

This worked right off the bat (if you have ever changed an internal CD/DVD, this will be a breeze for you).



It is incredibly nice to have custom artwork printed directly on the CD/DVD. I used to use a CD-Stomper printed label thing, which was OK, but this is so much cleaner and doesnt peel off over time.



The cons: 1) 30-mins to make a cover [longer than the data hehe] 2) B&W - no color 3) You need to physically remove the disc after the data and turn it over to do the cover.

Hopefully in future models they can do more with this, and fix at least 2 of the 3 issues mentioned.
