Customer Review: HP dvd840i
Easy to install. Works well. I haven't used the light scribe yet so no comment on that feature.
Customer Review: Unit is OK, Nero is not
The unit itself is not bad, I guess. But it comes with Nero software, and I can't remember a time when Nero wasn't a peice of junk. I had hoped Nero had improved their crappy software when I bought this drive. But nope. Nero is just as crappy as always. Even when it says it has verified the written data, half of the files on DVD are marked as ready to be written. This is a major problem. And when you try to update the Nero software, good luck. Their update routine makes you jump through hoops, and if you don't follow the exact sequence, you'll be in trouble. I don't know why Nero has such a hard time making a quality product, but I also dont understand why DVD drive manufacturers cant do a better job themselves.

Customer Review: HP quality and great value
Lightscribe works great, be sure to download the latest drivers
from HP so you can enable the lightscribe feature.
Customer Review: Works perfectly - love the personal pressings
This worked right off the bat (if you have ever changed an internal CD/DVD, this will be a breeze for you).
It is incredibly nice to have custom artwork printed directly on the CD/DVD. I used to use a CD-Stomper printed label thing, which was OK, but this is so much cleaner and doesnt peel off over time.
The cons: 1) 30-mins to make a cover [longer than the data hehe] 2) B&W - no color 3) You need to physically remove the disc after the data and turn it over to do the cover.
Hopefully in future models they can do more with this, and fix at least 2 of the 3 issues mentioned.

Customer Review: Wonderful Little Drive PERFECT for Acer Aspire One
This is a great little DVD/CD reader/writer drive. Mine worked fine right out of the box, no software installation required. It will run on USB power alone OR if you'd like, it ALSO has an regular AC cord. I haven't used the AC cord, but it's nice to know that I have it just in case... It also comes with a nice black pouch to store/transport and protect it and a SHORT USB cord (but functional). Good stuff.
I had my own full version of Nero 8 Software so I didn't use the included software to burn DVD/CDs. It worked great with my software.
The unit is slim (about an inch high) and doesn't weigh much (12 oz). I've used it with my Acer Aspire One (Windows XP) on USB power and it works like a charm! No need for an extra A/C adapter since it's completely powered by the USB, even when the Acer is on battery! (I installed some software from a DVD on my Aspire One during a power outage and everything worked great.) I'm taking this on my trips for when I really need to access a DVD (with my Aspire) or if I want to burn a backup CD or DVD. This is great!
My tray drawer lines up and closes perfectly fine and the unit looks good as far as being study... it's not metal, I wouldn't step on it, but the plastic looks good and seems solid enough for me.
Overall I'm very pleased with this purchase and recommend it especially with an Acer Aspire One.
Customer Review: I am going to return this
Problem 1-it is not technically mac compatible. i called the service center, and they weren't sure either. the lightscribe print-on-disc feature (seems very cool) doesn't work.
Problem 2-the disc tray doesn't close right. the whole drive seems cheap.
Problem 3-for a couple days it worked great, but not anymore. i have wasted 12 discs trying to find the magic combination of settings to get it to work...nada.
Problem 4-for a total of 21 discs, 9 were usable.

External DVD/cd Writer Black

External DVD/cd Writer Black
The DVR-X152 External USB 2.0 DVD/CD Writer makes installation to your computer an easy process. Simply plug the included USB cord into your computer, plug in the power supply, and you are ready to start writing DVDs or CDs. This DVD/CD writer includes the LightScribe Direct Disc Labeling functionality and software from Nero. These products allow computer users to create personal videos, make digital photo slideshows, burn music CDs and back up data files onto DVD-R, DVD-RW, +R and +RW discs with ease. LightScribe allows you to create custom labels that can be burned directly on to LightScribe enabled media. This DVD/CD writer also works with dual layer discs, increasing the capacity of a disc from 4.7 to 8.5 gigabytes for even more storage space. The DVR-X152 will write up to 20x on DVD-R (single layer) and up to 8x on DVD-R/+R (DL).
Customer Review: Device works well; software had installation issues...
Pioneer DVR-X152
This device reads or writes virtually any DVD or CD format; see Customer Images for the variations and speeds.
Pros:
- It comes with everything needed to install and use; i.e., all necessary cables and a Nero 8 software CD. The latter provides options for copying discs, audio "ripping", audio burning, data burning (e.g., from your hard drive), and disc labeling with LightScribe laser etching technology.
- To "install" this device on my Windows XP PC, it was connected via the included USB cable, plugged into the wall receptacle with the included transformer and cables, and powered up. XP recognized it, and it worked immediately. The Nero software wasn't required to write or read CDs or DVDs, since my PC had Sonic Digital Media software for those functions.
I've only created a dozen or so of CDs and DVDs and those worked fine, so I can't comment on high volume use.
-The LightScribe feature on the Pioneer DVR-X152 will laser etch a label of your design on a CD or DVD. You'll need LightScribe enabled CD or DVD media for this to work, which is much more expensive than regular discs.
Cons:
- The Nero 8 software wouldn't fully install on my Dell XPS Windows XP system. The "custom" install option, for example, terminates with an error message that the installation was interrupted and is shutting down, even though nothing interrupted it. Tried it several times and it always failed, which was very frustrating. However, it seems that the only thing that didn't finish was the creation of desktop and start menu shortcuts, which I did manually. The only unique function Nero offers, in my case, was creating and burning LightScribe labels. You'd think that such installation problems would have been fixed in Nero version 2, much less Nero 8.
Other:
- The LightScribe labeling function has two settings; default and dark. On default, it takes 17 minutes to etch a label onto a disc. On the dark setting, it takes 32 minutes per disc, but it's a better label; see Customer Images.
- I did a timed test, backing up data via the Pioneer drive and an internal NEC DVD drive (16x, model ND-3530A). The data consisted of 2,800 digital images consuming over 4 GB, nearly filling a DVD. Software used was Nero 8 or Sonic Digital Media LE, a competitor. Here's how long it took to write (burn) that data:
... Nero took 9 minutes 19 seconds on the NEC ND-3530A internal drive
... Nero took 7 minutes 29 seconds on the Pioneer drive
... Sonic took 6 minutes 9 seconds on the Pioneer drive
This (non-scientific) test shows that Sonic software writes faster than Nero, and that the Pioneer drive using a USB 2 interface writes faster than an internal 16x DVD drive (in a Dell XPS PC).
- Clicking the ? from Nero 8's window sends you to their web site, where they try to convince you to upgrade to Nero 9, the latest [extra cost] version. In fact, the bottom 10% of Nero 8's display is an ad for Nero 9. I'd expect such an annoyance from freeware, not from something you bought.
Summary:
The Nero 8 software deserves maybe two stars, but the device itself does everything I wanted it to, which averages out to a 4 star rating.
Customer Review: Useless for recording DVDs
Got this to replace my external Sony drive that died under warranty. (The replacement drive from Sony was of low quality.)
Every DVD this unit records skips/glitches on players that I know are compatible with recordable DVDs. Changing record speeds doesn't help.
CDs recorded with this drive do basically the same thing, unless you drop the burn speed down to 8x. Then it works OK.
I returned this drive for a refund.
It is good at reading discs and CD ripping, though.

Customer Review: I'm happy
For a non-technical person, the instructions were fairly good. I installed the drive easily and it works like a charm.
Customer Review: High quality DVD drive
This is not the cheapest DVD-ROM you'll find, but it's worth the extra $20 or so over an el cheapo model. It's solid, quiet, never vibrates, and is plenty fast. Overall, a typical, high quality Pioneer product.
This drive is IDE/ATAPI. There is an an almost identical Pioneer DVD drive with a SATA interface, but I picked this one since I didn't want to waste a SATA port on an optical drive.
